FEMA Selects Hannah Schultz for the 2018-2019 Youth Preparedness Council

Release Date:
Tháng 7 17, 2018

CHICAGO – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) welcomes Hannah Schultz from Marine City, Michigan as one of the 15 national selectees for the 2018–2019 Youth Preparedness Council (YPC).

FEMA created the YPC in 2012 to bring together young leaders who are interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities by completing disaster preparedness projects nationally and locally. The 15 council members will be attending the Youth Preparedness Council Summit in Washington, D.C., from July 17-18, to meet with FEMA leaders and other youth preparedness affirmers to prepare for the year ahead.

Hannah was selected for the YPC based on her commitment to youth preparedness. She is a member of the St. Clair County Youth Readiness Council. One of her recent preparedness initiatives was providing comfort kits to traumatized children who had been displaced from their homes. Hannah also created a winter car safety video that listed and discussed all of the materials that you should keep in your car during the winter in case of emergencies. Additionally, she spoke with younger children about fire safety and the proper steps for them to take in the event of a fire. Also, Hannah is planning a CPR and first aid training class for her council and other teens, ages 13 through 18. The goal of the training will be to inform teens on what to do during a disaster until first responders arrive on the scene.

“Hannah is exactly the type of young leader we’re excited to have as part of the Youth Preparedness Council,” said James K. Joseph, regional administrator for FEMA Region V in Chicago. “Along with her fellow council members, she’s a role model for disaster readiness, and is showing just how important it is to share that knowledge with others.”

During her time on the YPC, Hannah would like to teach teens what to do in an emergency until first responders arrive on the scene. As part of her project, she and her fellow council members would learn the basic procedures and techniques for properly responding to different scenarios (heart attack, gunshot wounds, etc.) and create videos that can be used nationwide.
