Floodplain Management

Any community CRS Coordinator that has experienced a major flood knows first-hand about the all-consuming reorientation of community priorities as the community responds to the immediate needs of its residents, helps in recovery, and undertakes mitigation opportunities. The CRS program recognizes the demands upon the CRS Coordinator during these times. This fact sheet highlights common CRS themes that arise during the recovery after a major flood.

On July 11, 2024, FEMA published a Final Rule in the Federal Register and an updated policy in the Federal Register to revise its floodplain management regulations at Title 44 Part 9 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR): Floodplain Management and Protection of Wetlands.

In addition to written comments, FEMA hosted three public virtual meetings to collect verbal comments from the public, including the private sector, government, Tribal Nations, and non-government entities. The meetings were held on Aug. 21 and 22. A public virtual meeting focused on Tribal Nations was held in August 2024.
