Survivors can talk with disaster recovery center personnel about their challenges recovering from hurricane damage, get started on applying for SBA low-interest disaster loans, receive helpful recovery information and discuss other issues of concern. However, it is not necessary to visit a DRC to receive FEMA assistance.

Survivors are encouraged to register with FEMA before visiting a disaster recovery center if possible. Homeowners, renters and business owners in Camden, Chatham, Glynn, Liberty and McIntosh counties who sustained damage or losses as a result of Hurricane Irma are eligible to register.

  • The quickest way to apply for federal assistance is online at DisasterAssistance.gov or through the FEMA mobile app.
  • Survivors may also apply by phone at 800-621-3362 (voice, 711 or VRS) or 800-462-7585 (TTY). Because of high demand, lines may be busy. Please be patient, and try calling in the morning or evening when call volume may be lower.
  • The toll-free numbers are open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, seven days a week.
  • Multilingual operators are available. Press 2 for Spanish and press 3 for other languages.

Representatives of the U.S. Small Business Administration are available to help survivors complete and submit their SBA loan applications, which could provide the largest portion of their recovery funds.

Disaster recovery centers are accessible to people with disabilities. Centers have assistive technology equipment allowing disaster survivors to use amplified telephones, phones that display text, amplified listening devices for people with hearing loss, and magnifiers for people with vision loss. Video Remote Interpreting is available and in-person sign language is available by request. The centers also have accessible parking, ramps and restrooms.

Residents of Glynn, Liberty and McIntosh counties, also designated for FEMA individual assistance, may visit either of the two open DRCs. The Georgia Emergency Management Agency and FEMA will open disaster recovery centers in additional counties in the coming days.

Survivors can locate the nearest disaster recovery center by using the FEMA mobile app or by visiting www.fema.gov/drc.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations. For more information, applicants may contact SBA’s Disaster Assistance Customer Service Center by calling 800-659-2955, emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov, or visiting SBA’s Web site at www.sba.gov/disaster. Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals may call  800-877-8339.
