$13 Million in Mitigation Grants Will Help Protect 68 Louisiana Properties

BATON ROUGE, La. —  Six Louisiana parishes will receive more than $13 million through FEMA’s Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant Program to help 68 properties resist flooding.

The FMA Grant Program provides financial assistance to reduce or eliminate the risk of repetitive flood damage, properties that have been identified with a high frequency of losses or a high value of claims. The program’s primary focus is to mitigate severe and repetitive loss properties, many of which are located in Special Flood Hazard Areas.

Government agencies and residents in these areas will benefit from the FMA program:

  • More than $4.9 million will fund the elevation of 25 residential properties located in St. Tammany Parish. Homes will be elevated to one foot above the Base Flood Elevation.
  • Nearly $3 million will elevate 15 residential properties and demolish two homes in Livingston Parish.
  • More than $1.6 million will elevate 11 homes in St. Charles Parish.
  • More than $1.3 million will mitigate eight residential properties in Tangipahoa Parish. This includes the demolition of two structures and the elevation of six homes.
  • The Vermillion Parish Police Jury will receive nearly $1.3 million to elevate five properties and demolish two other structures.
  • Nearly $1.2 million will be used to elevate eight residential properties in Terrebonne Parish. Homes will be elevated to one foot above the Base Flood Elevation.

Properties must be insurable under the NFIP to be eligible for the program. The FMA Grant Program was created as part of the National Flood Insurance Reform Act of 1994 to reduce or eliminate NFIP claims. Eligible applicants include states, tribal governments, territories and local communities. Applicants must have a FEMA-approved mitigation plan.
