The first step for Mississippi homeowners and renters in the 11 counties approved for FEMA assistance who had uninsured damage or loss caused by the March 14-15 severe storms, tornadoes and flooding is to apply for FEMA disaster assistance.
Homeowners and renters in Covington, Grenada, Issaquena, Itawamba, Jefferson Davis, Leflore, Marion, Montgomery, Pike, Smith, and Walthall counties can apply.
There are several ways to apply:
- Download the FEMA mobile app
- Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov
- Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Help is available in most languages. The Helpline is available daily from 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. CT.
- Visit a Disaster Recover Center. For locations and hours visit: fema.gov/drc
FEMA may be able to help renters as well as homeowners with serious needs, displacement costs, temporary lodging, repair or replacement of necessary personal property, such as clothing, textbooks or school supplies; replacement or repair of tools and other job-related equipment; vehicle repair; and medical/dental bills.
After you register, a FEMA inspector may contact you to schedule an appointment to review the damage to your home and personal property.
Inspectors will not determine if you are eligible, and they won’t take any money or ask for credit card information.
After the inspector’s visit, you should receive a decision letter. If eligible for assistance, you will receive a check or an electronic funds transfer and the letter will explain how the money should be used. If you are not eligible for assistance, the letter will explain the reasons, and how you can appeal the decision.
