City of Pearland constructs channel modifications to protect structures in 100-year flood limit.
Pearland, Texas: $19.68 million
Project Description
The Cowart Creek channel acts as a detention basis for the nearby BNSF Railway. Upstream of the railway are hundreds of structures within the 100-year flood limit, however, this area of Cowart Creek has less than a three-year capacity which has led to 344 repetitive loss and severe repetitive loss claims.
The proposed improvements include widening and deepening the channel from Main Street (SH35) to Veterans Drive and creating 546 acre-feet of detention between Veterans Drive and Wells Drive. It could also expand an existing detention basin to provide more than 775 acre-feet of storage. This project will provide a 100-year level of service in the channels and detention basins and provide benefits to 353 structures insured under the National Flood Insurance Program upstream and downstream of the project area.
