Despite Hurricane Damages, Hospital Serves Community

Fishermen's Community Hospital in Marathon, Florida, owned and operated by Baptist Health South Florida, was permanently damaged by Hurricane Irma. The roof was compromised and the resultant damage deemed the structure unusable. To continue to serve the community, they opened a field hospital in the parking lot of the hospital which will be in service until July when they open a new temporary modular facility which will house all of their compnents under one structure so patients will not have to go from unit to unit, exposed to the elements, in their current setup. Ultimately they will demolish the original building and rebuild on the same spot, but with updated codes and practices to be more resistant to future hurricane forces.
