What You Need to Know about COVID-19 Funeral Assistance
Please join the FEMA Region 2 National Preparedness Division in partnership with the Individual Assistance Branch for a webinar on FEMA’s COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program.

FEMA understands the financial stress and burden this pandemic has caused families and is willing to assist with the financial needs. On April 12, FEMA began implementing Funeral Assistance nationwide to provide financial support for funeral costs specifically related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This webinar will provide information regarding the implementation of this new policy and guidance on applicability, conditions of eligibility, required documentation, and other important topics.

Who should attend? The whole community – individuals and families, volunteer and faith-based organizations, local, state, federal government and private sector entities. Available in Spanish.    

Back to School: COVID-19 Preparedness and Helping Young Children Transition
Transitioning back to early childhood programs or school— or starting them for the first time—can create extra challenges during a pandemic. Angelika Claussen, Research Psychologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention described what early childhood care and education program administrators, teachers, and parents can do to help children make a successful transition to in-person learning and care. Glen Karpovich, emergency management specialist, R2 Administration for Children and Families discussed how to prepare students for returning to the classroom in a COVID-19 environment.

"What Would You Do" Scenarios

A key element to successfully responding to and recovering from a major disaster is the overall preparedness of individual citizens, families and the community. With that in mind, we invite you to participate in a series of ‘What would you do?’ scenarios to assess your level of preparedness. These tabletop activities are intended to be low-stress conversation starters for the whole community. Each scenario includes discussion questions for the activity, a facilitator guide and some helpful links to enhance individual and community preparedness.

Youth Preparedness Council

FEMA’s National Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) was created in 2012 to bring together youth leaders interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities with national and local preparedness projects. Since 2012 many states, counties and municipalities have adopted this model to form their own YPCs.  

The Region II YPC supports FEMA’s ongoing commitment to involve the youth of America in preparedness-related activities and resilience. Students from New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and our Tribal Nations come together to implement preparedness projects in an effort to make their communities better prepared and more resilient.

Regional Long-Term Recovery

Our capabilities were tested in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy affected the entire East Coast from Florida to Maine, as well as states as far inland as West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana. The storm’s effects were extensive, leaving millions without power, destroying hundreds of thousands of homes and causing tens of billions in damages. Read more on our Historic Disaster Page.

Appointed following the historic impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria. He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and has worked as an attorney in private practice, for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and for the federal government.
