October 7, 2010 - News Release

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.  -- The catastrophic winter storms that inundated Virginia in December and February left the Commonwealth blanketed with record and near record snow amounts.  The result was two presidential disaster declarations which, as of September 30, has resulted in federal grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) totaling $28,459,094.47

September 23, 2010 - News Release

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today the approval of $6,280,483.39 in federal funds to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) for costs associated with debris removal, emergency protective measures, and state maintained infrastructure from the 2009 severe winter storms. To date, more than $21 million has been obligated to Virginia applicants affected by the December disaster.

July 9, 2010 - News Release

RICHMOND, VA. -- The Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced the City of Buena Vista is designated eligible for Public Assistance for the December 18 – 20, 2009, severe winter storm and snowstorm.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
