The town of Benson tackles recurring flooding challenges with nature-based solutions through stream restoration and roadway improvements
Benson, North Carolina: $2.18 million
Project Description
Benson, a small town of 974 residents, has faced recurring flooding issues on North Market Street, the sole access route to its Public Utilities Office and maintenance yard. Floods have made the street impassable during storms. This hinders access to vital maintenance equipment.
This project involves stream restoration and roadway improvements to a 375-foot section of Driving Branch. It will daylight the stream channel and excavate a floodplain bench. This is currently conveyed through pipes beneath the former maintenance yard. These efforts will enhance stream stability, flood flow storage and riparian habitat. They will ensure reliable access and clear passage for maintenance and emergency vehicles.
