Wildfire Mitigation Tools and Resources: I am an Individual in a Community

The following tools and resources provide information regarding wildfire mitigation for homeowners, renters, and individual members of the community.

America’s PrepareAthon consists of an in-depth overview of wildfire preparedness with an extensive list of resources. The site encourages participation in preparedness activities.


Fire Information Engine, developed by the Center for Fire Research and Outreach at the University of California, provides a homeowner’s wildfire assessment that can be filled out to gauge the risk of your home or property to wildfire. offers a toolkit with detail regarding Firewise principles, a checklist for homeowners, a checklist for communities, extensive community resources, academic research, online learning opportunities, fact sheets and pamphlets for educational outreach.

Guide to Fire Adapted Communities was released by The Fire Adapted Communities Coalition. The six chapter guide covers everything from “What is a Fire Adapted Community” to “Collaboration and Outreach” and “Planning and Regulatory Considerations.”

Last-Minute Checklist for Protecting Your Property, created by the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, provides a quick one page breakdown of things to do if you are faced with a potential wildfire.





Prepare for Wildfire, created by Cal Fire, offers a number of wildfire resources including an overview of defensible space, information pertaining to how to harden your home, and fire-safe landscaping. The site also also offers insight as to how you can create your own wildfire action plan.


Protect Your Home from Wildfire: Creating Wildfire-Defensible Zones offers in-depth detail on what you can do to protect your home and property from wildfire.




Tools for Homeowners, created by the Center for Fire Research & Outreach at the University of California, is a robust toolkit and offers a homeowner’s wildfire mitigation guide. The guide includes extensive details such as mitigation techniques around the top of the house, vents, side of the house and the perimeter of the structure. In addition, tools for researchers are highlighted along with links to additional resources.
