OAKLAND, Calif. — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approved $35.8 million to reimburse the State of Arizona for the purchase of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of state, county, and tribal personnel, healthcare facility workers, and first responders.
Funds covered the acquisition of tens of thousands of items of PPE, such as N95 and surgical masks, gowns, gloves, booties, bonnets, coveralls, face shields, goggles, infrared thermometers, hand sanitizer, and cleaning supplies.
The $47.7 million project is financed by $35.8 million from FEMA’s Public Assistance (PA) program, with non-federal sources paying the remaining $11.9 million.
PA supports recovery from a major disaster by providing financial assistance for debris removal, life-saving emergency protective measures, and the restoration of public infrastructure. PA is a cost-sharing program that reimburses applicants at least 75 percent of eligible costs, with the remaining 25 percent covered by non-federal sources. The federal share is paid directly to the state, which disburses funds to agencies, local governments, and certain private nonprofit organizations that incurred costs.
