FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Maricao Closing but Help Still Available

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – The disaster recovery center in Maricao will close Monday, July 30 at 3 p.m.

The center is located at Casa Alcaldía, Calle José de Diego in Maricao.

Survivors can still visit any of the 58 recovery centers that will remain open. Centers nearest Maricao are:

After the center closes, disaster survivors whose homes or businesses were affected by hurricanes Irma and Maria can get updates about their applications and learn about the appeals process the following ways:

Log into their accounts at DisasterAssistance.gov

  • Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362). Persons who are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability and use a TTY may call 800-462-7585. Toll-free numbers are open daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Visit any disaster recovery center. To find one, visit FEMA.gov/DRC.

Recovery officials encourage Irma and Maria survivors who registered for disaster assistance with FEMA to stay in touch. If survivors change addresses or phone numbers they should contact FEMA to update their information. Missing or erroneous information could result in delays in receiving assistance.

  • Explain why you think FEMA’s decision is not correct. Be as specific as possible.
  • Include a list of all the damage and additional unmet needs.
  • Attach copies of all supporting evidence of your claim such as:
    • Pictures
    • Medical statements
    • Landlord statements
    • Itemized list of vendor information (list of materials, amounts needed and costs)
    • Merchandise or services receipts
    • School/employer statement (in case school or work uniforms or materials such as computers were lost)
  • Sign and date the appeal letter.
    • If the person writing the letter is not the applicant or a member of the household, the applicant must sign a statement authorizing the writer to act on their behalf.
  • Keep a copy of the appeal letter, the originals of all pictures and receipts, and all other documents provided to FEMA.

If applicants do not receive a response within two weeks of filing their appeal, they should contact FEMA by visiting a disaster recovery center or calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362), (TTY) 800-462-7585.

Survivors can appeal as many times as they need after they receive a FEMA determination letter. To file another appeal, applicants will need to send new supporting documents or new evidence that substantiates the claim.

Disaster recovery assistance is available without regard to race, color, religion, nationality, sex, age, disability, English proficiency or economic status.
