ORLANDO, Fla. – The Florida Division of Emergency Management will receive nearly $70 million from FEMA to help cover some of the expenses for saving lives and protecting property in Florida before, during and after Hurricane Irma.
The FEMA funds will reimburse FDEM for costs for first responder facilities, Emergency Operation Center costs and costs of operating them, including staff salaries, housing and equipment.
FEMA’s Public Assistance program approved two grants to FDEM: one for $45 million, the other for $24 million. Public Assistance is a cost-sharing program with FEMA reimbursing applicants no less than 75 percent of eligible costs, and the remaining covered by a nonfederal source.
FEMA has already provided more than $100 million in Public Assistance grants to reimburse Hurricane Irma-related expenses for Florida communities.
The Public Assistance program is available in all 67 Florida counties through the federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Irma. More than 1,000 government entities and nonprofits across Florida are seeking PA reimbursement for Hurricane Irma.
