FEMA has been working with local officials to complete a Risk Mapping, Assessment and Planning (Risk MAP) project, which aims to provide new or improved flood hazard information to help communities understand their current flood risk and make informed decisions about taking action to protect against future risk. One outcome of this project is the recently revised preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), which outlines where flood risks have changed.

During the upcoming Open House event, citizens and business owners will have the opportunity to learn more about the data and information that was evaluated as part of the Risk MAP project, how that influenced the new flood map and where within the new map their own property lies. Additionally, flood risk and insurance experts will be available to answer questions that attendees have about the impact on their flood insurance.

“Flooding is the most common natural disaster; if it can rain, it can flood.  We can and should strive to make communities in Lackawanna County safer and stronger against future risk,” said Katie Lipiecki, Risk Analysis Branch Chief in FEMA Region III. “By relying on the most up-to-date data, officials and residents in Lackawanna County can make informed decisions toward becoming more resilient.”

Additional information can be found on the Map Service Center at: MSC.FEMA.gov. Citizens and businesses can also contact their local floodplain administrator for more details.
