ATLANTA –New members of the 2019-2020 regional Youth Preparedness Council, a group of 13 high schoolers committed to improving the preparedness and resilience of their communities in the event of an emergency, were announced today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Atlanta.
Members were selected based on their community involvement, public service and potential to impact youth preparedness.
“Disasters affect everyone, and it’s important to include our youth in preparing for them,” said FEMA Region IV Administrator Gracia Szczech. “This group can communicate the importance of emergency preparedness to youth while they demonstrate a commitment to their community’s preparedness for all kinds of emergencies.”
The Region IV Youth Preparedness Council cultivates leadership, citizenship and life skills and provides a platform for them to share their ideas to help build stronger and more resilient communities.

The council provides an avenue to engage young people and hear their perspectives, feedback and opinions. Members will work with FEMA staff, who serve as their mentors, to complete one preparedness project.
