CHICAGO – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has released $1,897,175 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for a community safe-room project.

“The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program helps create safer communities by reducing loss of life and property damage,” said James K. Joseph, regional administrator, FEMA Region V.  “The construction of these community safe rooms will protect the lives of vulnerable citizens by providing a secure location to seek shelter from tornados and other high-wind events.”

HMGP provides grants to state, local and tribal governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures. Through HMGP, FEMA will pay 75 percent of the $2,529,567 eligible project cost.  The remaining 25 percent of the funds, $632,392, will be provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

FEMA’s mission is helping people before, during, and after disasters.
