The following information answers some questions people may have about the process.

Answers to questions about registration for those in Allen and Iberia parishes

Question: How can I register for FEMA assistance?

Answer: By:

  • Going online to DisasterAssistance.gov;
  • Downloading the FEMA app; or
  • Calling 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585.

Those who use a relay service such as a videophone, InnoCaption or CapTel should alert FEMA as to the specific number assigned to that service.

Question: What if I registered for Hurricane Delta assistance before my parish was declared for assistance?

Answer: Those who previously registered with FEMA for Hurricane Delta assistance from those two parishes do not have to re-register. Their registrations, which were held, will now be processed.

Question: What if I am registered for Laura but not for Delta? Do I have to register again?

Answer: Allen Parish residents who previously registered for Hurricane Laura must register again to qualify for damage caused by Hurricane Delta. When there are two or more disasters declared for the same parish, FEMA works to ensure applicants receive all eligible help.

Question: If I live in Iberia or Allen parish can I sign up for a temporary housing unit?

Answer: Direct housing is not yet available in Allen or Iberia parish. However, other housing options might be available.

Answers to questions on direct housing options for Hurricane Delta

Question: In what parishes are survivors eligible for direct temporary housing?

Answer: FEMA’s Direct Housing mission was expanded under Hurricane Delta to include Acadia, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, Rapides, St. Landry, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes. Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, Jefferson Davis, and Rapides parishes were already included under Hurricane Laura. Not everyone who registers with FEMA will qualify for a direct housing referral.

Question: What housing options are now available to survivors in these parishes?

Answer: There are several solutions available, but FEMA rental assistance remains the primary means of helping survivors with temporary housing needs.

Question: How do I let FEMA know I want a temporary housing unit?

Answer:

  • If you are not registered, you must first register for FEMA assistance. FEMA will automatically add Direct Housing to your application if appropriate.
  • If you are already registered and appear to qualify, FEMA will add direct housing to your application.
  • Eligible families with a direct-housing referral are automatically contacted by a FEMA caseworker.

Question: How will I find out if I can get a temporary housing unit?

Answer: The deadline for referrals for direct temporary housing assistance is Jan. 31 for Hurricane Laura applicants and Feb. 28 for Hurricane Delta applicants. If you have not been contacted by the applicable date, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585.

Question: What if I have been told I’m not eligible for a FEMA temporary housing unit?

Answer: Applicants who have not received a call from FEMA to discuss options or who have received an ineligible  determination letter and feel this is in error are encouraged to submit an appeal to FEMA with supporting documentation to prove their home is uninhabitable due to major damage or complete destruction. To find out how to appeal, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-462-7585.
