Check Tie-Downs and Anchoring of Manufactured Homes

High-wind events can damage or destroy manufactured homes. While revisions to manufactured home standards continue to improve performance, older manufactured homes remain in use and are particularly vulnerable to high winds  .

Below are several recommendations for ensuring that your manufactured home is properly anchored to mitigate impacts of high-wind events as effectively as possible.

  • Contact your local building department. Your local building department can confirm the required number of tie-downs for manufactured homes in your jurisdiction.

  • Check the manufacturer’s guidelines. Manufacturers’ guidelines are a good resource to consult to determine the appropriate tension of the straps as well as other information about the anchoring system of your manufactured home.

  • Check for loose straps. Straps securing the manufactured home to the ground should be tight and straight, not loose.

  • Check for corrosion and damage. Check the straps and ground anchors for signs of damage or corrosion. Straps should not be bent or misshapen. If there are signs of damage, promptly replacing them is important.
