FEMA Approves $18.7 Million for University of Maryland Medical System

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) will receive $18,711,424.72 in expedited federal funding from FEMA for Emergency Protective Measures as a result of FEMA-DR-4491-MD (COVID-19).

COVID-19 created an immediate threat to the health and safety of the general public requiring emergency response and protective measures. In response to the event, UMSS provided an Emergency Operations Center, facility disinfection procedures jurisdiction wide, and technical assistance for emergency management to support the management and control of immediate threats to public safety. UMMS supported the provision, pre-positioning and movement of supplies, equipment and commodities, including personal protective equipment (PPE), medical equipment, decontamination system and medical services. This emergency work increased the capacity for testing, diagnosis, treatment and expansion of temporary medical facilities in the state of Maryland.

The $18,711,424.72 grant represents a FEMA cost-share of the total project cost of $24,948,566.29.

This grant is funded through FEMA’s Public Assistance Grant program which reimburses communities for actions taken in the immediate response and during recovery from a disaster. Eligible applicants include states, federally recognized tribal governments, U.S. territories, local governments, and certain private non-profit organizations. The grant applications are submitted from the state, which coordinates the process with local governments.

Prior to this award, FEMA has obligated $627,640.04 to the state as a result of damages from FEMA-DR-4491-MD under the Public Assistance program.
