Culebra, PR, December 9, 2017 -- Sgt. Perez worked with the Tourism Company of Culebra but was activated in the state guard September 4, right before Hurricane Irma struck. “Ellos trabajan por nosotros como si ellos fueran de acá (They worked for us as if they were from here),” she would remark about the work FEMA Intergovernmental Affairs (IGA) and Buck have done in Culebra. Sgt. Perez has helped distribute enough meals provided by FEMA to feed 40,000 people in Culebra, the island only has 1,800 residents. For the last three weeks they distributed FEMA food boxes and cases of water more than once a week until now because businesses have stabilized and income is being generated. Hurricane Maria hit multiple municipalities in Puerto Rico. Hector Huyke Villeneuve/FEMA.
