FEMA has provided more than $33 million to help Iowa communities recover from the derecho that struck the state on August 10, 2020.
For homeowners and renters:
- FEMA conducted about 7,300 damage inspections of homes whose residents filed disaster assistance applications.
- FEMA has approved 3,084 households for more than $11.2 million in Individual Assistance grants.
- This money has already been provided to help survivors with basic home repairs, temporary rental assistance, lodging reimbursement and other needs not covered by insurance.
- By law, FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments or assistance provided by other programs or organizations.
- Fortunately, most Iowa homeowners, renters, business owners and farmers have insurance coverage for severe wind damage. Private insurance has paid more than $1.6 billion in claims as of November 2020, according to state data.
Assistance for governments:
- FEMA has provided more than $21.4 million to the State of Iowa to reimburse local governments for debris removal, emergency protective measures and permanent work projects related to the derecho. FEMA funding covers at least 75 percent of eligible costs.
- FEMA has obligated an additional $369,000 to the State for hazard mitigation.
- In addition to FEMA funding, the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $27 million in disaster loans for homeowners, renters and businesses in Iowa.
