The state-led, federally supported Community Vaccination Centers (CVCs) in Oakland and Los Angeles have given more than half a million vaccine doses in less than six weeks. To maximize the number of people served, FEMA and the state will begin providing the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine to new patients at CVCs April 1. The “J & J” vaccine has undergone rigorous clinical trials and been approved at federal and state levels, as have the two-dose Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Using the single-dose vaccine allows more people to be vaccinated in less time, and still get safe, effective protection. The numbers below tell the story of how the CVCs did over the past week.
How many have been vaccinated?
The CVCs are close to public transit and offer three ways to access vaccinations: Drive-thru, Walk-thru and Mobile units. Each site has three mobile vaccination centers. Below are the number of vaccine doses by each method at each center.
- LOS ANGELES CVC, 5151 State University Dr., Los Angeles (Los Angeles County):
- Drive-thru, 198,401; Walk-thru, 33,971; Mobile, 31,784
- Total: 264,156
- OAKLAND CVC, 7000 Coliseum Way, Oakland (Alameda County):
- Drive-thru, 219,022; Walk-thru, 27,866; Mobile, 35,006.
- Total: 281,894
- Total shots for both centers: 546,050 (Numbers include first and second Pfizer shots and a limited number of Johnson & Johnson vaccinations.)
FAQs about COVID Shots
Is the J&J vaccine as good as the two-dose vaccines?
“I want every Californian to have the utmost confidence that this vaccine, and all three vaccines, are safe and effective,” says Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, Surgeon General of California. The sooner we all get vaccinated, the sooner herd immunity will be established, and we can all get back to normal.

How does herd immunity work?
When enough people have had the disease or have been vaccinated, a community gains protection. The more people vaccinated, the harder for the disease to spread from person to person. Researchers don’t yet know how many people must be vaccinated against COVID-19 before most people are protected. Eventually herd immunity protects those who cannot be vaccinated, like newborns or people who are allergic to the vaccine.
