FOIA Request 2025-00507: Georgia and South Carolina Hurricane Helene, Georgia Tropical Storm Debby

Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend area of the Florida Gulf Coast as a Category 4 storm late in the evening of September 26, 2024. Helene's largest impacts were across the southern Appalachians where widespread severe and unprecedented flooding occurred with hundreds of fatalities and billions in property damage. Strong wind gusts damaged property and blew trees and power lines down in a swath from the Gulf Coast to the North Carolina mountains.

Debby formed as a tropical storm in the southeast Gulf of Mexico, just north of Cuba, on August 3rd, 2024. During the evening of August 4th, 2024, the storm was upgraded to a hurricane as it neared the state of Florida. Debby made landfall in the Big Bend region of Florida's panhandle, as a category 1 hurricane on the morning of August 5th, 2024, then crossing Florida and Georgia, hugging the southeast coast as a tropical storm.
