The New Jersey Department of Health has released Mold Guidelines for New Jersey Residents recovering from Superstorm Sandy.
The State’s guidelines have been revised to more thoroughly inform homeowners about the importance of remediating homes or businesses affected by molds and provide some suggestions on how New Jerseyans can take corrective actions to address such conditions.
Where can I find mold?
Molds are fungi that occur naturally in the environment. Molds can be found almost anywhere. Molds may grow in different shapes and appear brown, yellow, green or black in color. The appearance of mold depends on the species of mold present. Molds may be odorless or they may emit a strong or unpleasant odor (musty). Molds may also grow unnoticed above ceilings, behind walls, in attics and basements, or in crawl spaces.
What happens if I have been exposed to mold?
Exposure to mold can cause nasal and throat irritation, coughing or wheezing, eye irritation, or, in some cases, skin irritation. If you think you have been exposed to mold, seek medical assistance.
How do I get rid of mold?
If you suspect that mold is present in your house or in your small business, you need to take corrective actions right away.
A homeowner or business owner may be capable of cleaning up molds contamination for smaller areas that are less than 10-square-feet, and have been affected by mold growth. For larger areas greater than 100-square-feet, a qualified contractor who has experience in mold or environmental contamination may be required.
For anyone performing mold removal or remediation work, remember to always wear protective gear, including gloves, protective clothing, mask and goggles.
