The Borough of West Wildwood, New Jersey, has proposed a wave attenuation and flood protection project to restore the previous marsh barrier.

Project Description
The Borough of West Wildwood is an island community located on the back bay intercoastal waterway in southeast Cape May County, New Jersey, consisting of 220 total acres, half of which are environmentally sensitive lands where development is not prohibited. There are 60 active National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies and there have been 183 repetitive loss and severe repetitive loss claims.
West Wildwood is surrounded by the bay waters and has proposed a wave attenuation and flood protection project to restore the marsh barrier known as 26th Street. The 26th Street project is based on living shoreline principles. The project will include six stone breakwaters with adjoining marsh and beach habitat in a tombolo formation with a variety of elevations behind the breakwaters that will let natural adaptation occur and will make plantings more successful. The combination of rock, sand and marsh will also provide both ecosystem services and increased storm resilience.
