DuPage County, Illinois: $597,900

Project Description

Many homeowners in DuPage County are facing riverine flooding and damage has increased due to climate change and development. The DuPage County Stormwater Management Department supports residents with floodplain mapping and assistance from Certified Floodplain Managers, while Dupont County operates a Voluntary Buyout Program to acquire and demolish properties that have a history of flood damage. This project will acquire and demolish two single-family homes that have six severe repetitive loss and repetitive loss claims, or that have met Substantial Damage limits with their local community, and so meet the criteria for buyouts.

Riverine and urban flooding causes damages to homes throughout the county. These damages will continue to increase in the future due to climate change and increased development. Homes that experience severe and repetitive losses caused by flood damages are the primary target for this project. By removing these homes from the floodplain, the risk of damage to the property is completely eliminated. Additionally, the converted open space will help relieve flooding within the area by acting as stormwater storage during flooding events, which benefits the neighborhood that the acquisition occurs in.
