SANTA FE, N.M. – FEMA has named Jay Mitchell as the Director of Operations, leading the day-to-day operations for both the Claims Office and Stafford Act wildfire disaster recovery operations based in Santa Fe. Mitchell is expected to begin in May and will be supported in his transition by leadership at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The FEMA Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Claims Office is hosting two hiring fairs at the end of April and beginning of May for full-time Claims Office staff. The hiring fairs will help fill full-time positions to support the important mission of processing claims and compensating those impacted by the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire.

The Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire Assistance Act states compensation for losses resulting from the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire is not considered income for federal, state, and local taxes. Additionally, entitlement programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, Unemployment Insurance, welfare programs, and other social programs WILL NOT be affected.

The FEMA Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Claims Office in Las Vegas will remain open until 10 p.m. on Monday, April 8, resuming regular business hours Tuesday, April 9.
