ANCHORAGE, Alaska – More than $100 million in State of Alaska and federal disaster assistance is helping fuel the recovery of residents and businesses that suffered damage from the Nov. 30 Alaska earthquake.
On January 31, 2019, a federal disaster declaration was approved for the Municipality of Anchorage, Matanuska-Susitna Borough and Kenai Peninsula Borough. More than 10,500 individuals and households in those jurisdictions have applied for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
As of July 11, FEMA’s Individuals and Households program has approved more than $21 million to repair disaster-damaged homes and pay for temporary housing. Another $299,350 was approved under Other Needs Assistance, a FEMA program that provides funding for disaster-caused expenses and serious needs including medical, dental, transportation, and moving and storage expenses.
Additionally, the U.S. Small Business Administration has approved $78,266,800 in low-interest disaster loans to 1,884 homeowners, renters and businesses including:
- more than $70.3 million for 1,772 homeowners and renters; and
- more than $7.89 million for 112 businesses.
The state of Alaska’s Individual Assistance program has provided $1.2 million in disaster assistance to individuals and families affected by the earthquake. In the days and weeks immediately following the quake, the state provided emergency sheltering, hotel stays and rental assistance. More than 13,800 residents applied to the state for assistance.
