What We Do
Individual and Community Preparedness Division
We connect individuals, organizations, and communities with research and tools to build and sustain capabilities to prepare for any disaster or emergency.
Our goal is to achieve a culture of preparedness, where all 327 million people living in the United States know their relevant hazards, have taken actions to prepare themselves. To do this, we:
- Conduct research and provide current, validated guidance on how to prepare for, protect against and respond to disasters.
- Lead efforts to increase financial resilience across the nation by working with federal and nonprofit partners.
- Partner with local governments and community groups like businesses and school campuses to help them become more resilient.
- Train volunteers on disaster preparedness and basic response skills.
- Engage, educate and empower young people in preparedness activities.
National Exercise Division
We lead national efforts to validate capabilities of the whole community in support of the National Preparedness System across the prevention, protection, mitigation, response and recovery mission areas through the National Exercise Program.
National Integration Center (NIC)
We develop guidance and tools to assist communities in tackling their unique preparedness challenges and coordinate the adoption and implementation of a common incident management platform for emergency responders and officials.
National Preparedness Assessment Division
We advance preparedness for all hazards by assessing progress, the effectiveness of preparedness programs and resources, and communicating lessons learned to help the nation continually improve.
National Training and Education Division
We provide world-class training and education for the nation’s first responders, emergency managers and other members of the whole community. We partner with over 600 higher education institutions to help advance the emergency management profession and foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation through formal education and research.
Technological Hazards Division
We build the emergency preparedness and response capabilities of communities surrounding nuclear power plants and U.S. Army chemical stockpile sites to help them plan for and respond to any incident. The Technological Hazards Division’s work covers a wide range of activities in a specialized field. Key programs include the Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program (REPP) and the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP).
