April 3, 2003 - News Release

Dededo, Guam -- Disaster relief and assistance to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands following Typhoon Pongsona has climbed to $17.4 million since President George W. Bush declared the area eligible for federal disaster aid on December 11. Pongsona struck on December 8, 2002, leaving behind one of the costliest disasters to hit Micronesia in decades.

March 18, 2003 - News Release

Dededo, Guam -- In the first 100 days following Typhoon Pongsona, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and many other federal agencies provided more than $12.1 million in disaster relief and assistance in Rota. Pongsona struck the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands on December 8, 2002. Since December 11, when President Bush declared the storm's effects on Rota a federal disaster, $12.1 million in assistance has been provided to individuals, businesses and public entities on Rota who suffered losses as a result of the typhoon.

March 14, 2003 - News Release

Dededo, Guam -- FEMA Director and Acting Under Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate, a part of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael D. Brown, has announced that President George W. Bush signed documents amending the August 6, 2002 and the December 11, 2002 disaster declarations for the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, increasing the federal cost-share from the previous 75 percent to 90 percent. The authorization was based on special conditions and documentation, which warranted the adjustment of Federal funds.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards
