The COVID-19 pandemic has brought overwhelming grief and financial hardship to many families. At FEMA, we are dedicated to helping ease some of the financial stress and burden caused by the virus.

FEMA began accepting Funeral Assistance applications on April 12, 2021. Join our panel of experts to learn more about program policy, eligibility, how to apply and how to protect yourself against fraud when applying for benefits.

1:15 - 1:25 p.m.: Nancy Casper, FEMA, Federal Coordinating Officer and COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Task Force Lead
Overview of FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance, including the policy, eligibility, and documentation criteria. FEMA implemented COVID-19 Funeral Assistance on April 12, 2021, under the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, which authorizes FEMA to provide financial assistance to individuals who incurred COVID-19-related funeral expenses after January 20, 2020.

1:25 – 1:30 p.m.: Gay Jones, FEMA, Office of External Affairs, Language Services
External Affairs Language Branch is responsible both for LEP and effective communication access. For those who plan to apply for Funeral Assistance, Gay Jones will provide an overview of the process and the language included in all FEMA publications for those who use a relay service (i.e. videophone, Innocaption, CapTel, others).

1:30 – 1:40 p.m.: Bill Wilson, Director, FEMA Fraud Investigations and Inspections Division
FEMA uses a multi-pronged approach to identify, detect, mitigate and prevent fraud, waste and abuse of federal funds in all of FEMA’s programs (e.g. Individual Assistance, Public Assistance, Grants, Flood Insurance, contracting and procurement). These efforts include fraud investigations, program reviews, fraud prevention and awareness training, interagency partnerships and intra-agency collaboration. Bill Wilson will provide an overview of the most common fraud schemes, how to protect yourself against them and how to report suspected fraudulent activity.
