The integrity of our natural and historic landscape is important to us all, and steps taken to strengthen or rebuild communities can have long-term environmental and cultural impacts. To ensure proper stewardship of historic properties and the environment, there are more than 30 federal regulations, directives, and legal mandates — in addition to a number of state laws and codes — in place to protect these resources.
FEMA’s EHP experts provide specialized guidance and practical long-term planning assistance to communities across the county to ensure that proposed projects align with environmental planning and preservation requirements.

Proposed Rulemaking for Comment on Federal Flood Risk Management Standard
On Oct. 2, FEMA published in the Federal Register revisions to its floodplain management regulations at Title 44 Part 9 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR): Floodplain Management and Protection of Wetlands. The revisions propose to fully implement the FFRMS.
The FFRMS increases the resilience of federally funded projects by incorporating anticipated changes in future flood risk into certain federally funded projects to ensure that those projects last as long as intended. The comment period will close on Dec. 1.
