La Semana Nacional del Voluntario en abril nos permite reconocer el extraordinario trabajo que los voluntarios realizan en todo el país. Nuestros colegas de FEMA merecen reconocimiento por personificar el espíritu de esta celebración al retribuirle a sus comunidades mediante su servicio para que estas sean más resilientes.

April’s National Volunteer Week gives us an opportunity to recognize the extraordinary work volunteers do across the nation. Our FEMA colleagues deserve recognition for embodying the spirit of this celebration as they give back to make their communities more resilient through service.

El 12 de enero, intensas tormentas, vientos directos y tornados azotaron Alabama. Las tormentas dañaron viviendas e infraestructura pública en 11 condados. Sin embargo, el Black Belt (Cinturón Negro) fue el área más afectada. En comunidades desatendidas como estas, los voluntarios locales están en una posición única para responder de inmediato, comprender las necesidades de las comunidades y maximizar los recursos del área. Las organizaciones comunitarias comparten una identidad con los residentes, están comprometidas con su bienestar y fomentan un sentido de pertenencia.

On Jan. 12, severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes struck Alabama. The storms damaged homes and public infrastructure in 11 counties. However, the Black Belt was the most affected area. In underserved communities such as these, local volunteers are uniquely positioned to respond immediately, understand the communities’ needs and leverage area resources. Grassroots organizations share an identity with the residents, are committed to their wellbeing and foster a sense of ownership.

When disasters happen, one of the first groups to jump into action are our partners with West Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (WV VOAD). Last month, WV VOAD held their annual conference in South Charleston with the theme “Partnering in Resiliency.”
