Welcome to the Region VIII Risk Mapping, Analysis, and Planning (Risk MAP) website for North Dakota!
Risk MAP is a national FEMA program to work with states, tribes, territories, and local communities to evaluate and better understand their current flood risk, as well as the actions that can be taken to mitigate and become more resilient against future risk. More details about the Risk MAP program can be found here, and specific project information can be found by entering your community information into our Projects page.

Ward County Preliminary Floodplain Mapping
Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) Region 8 and the North Dakota State Water Commission have been supporting Ward County and the cities of Minot, Burlington and Sawyer in finalizing a flood study that updates Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for communities across Ward County, North Dakota. The flood hazards shown on the newly updated FIRM are used by communities to determine where to enforce floodplain development regulations; by lenders to determine flood insurance requirements; and by insurance providers to determine flood insurance rates.
These maps are being updated to help Ward County and its communities understand the flood risk that they face and help community officials and residents start making decisions now to protect property, invest for the future and build safer.
We encourage residents and community leaders to fully understand the risk of flooding in your area so that you know how future floods may affect you and if specific flood insurance and building requirements apply to your property, now or in the future.
Public meetings will be held in Minot, Burlington and Sawyer to help residents understand what these FIRM updates mean for them and their property. Mark your calendar to ensure you are able to attend your community public open house (and all three meetings are open to any Ward County resident).

Know Your Risk
Floods are one of the most common and costly natural disasters in the nation and can happen in any location at any time. Remember, just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past, doesn’t mean you won’t in the future. It is important for you to understand the flood risk to your property so that you can take steps now to keep your family, home and workplace safe from harm. Here are ways you can find out your property’s flood risk:
- View the effective FEMA flood map for your location at the FEMA Flood Map Service Center. Read the Product and Tools Overview page for different viewing options through Google Earth and the FEMA GeoPlatform.
- Contact your community’s floodplain administrator (often an official in the zoning or planning department) to learn more about local flood risks in your area. They can also tell you whether a flood risk project is underway that affects your community.
