William Zito

Assistant Administrator, National Continuity Programs

July, 22nd  2019 Mr. William Zito Jr. was appointed to his current position as the Assistant Administrator for National Continuity Programs,  which is charged with the coordination, implementation, and execution of the continuity plans and programs of the executive branch, and with ensuring that the President and Federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial governments can provide timely and effective alerts and warnings to the public, under all conditions.  Prior to his appointment, Mr. Zito served as FEMA’s Deputy Chief of Staff for one year.  Mr. Zito has over 27 years in leadership positions both in the U.S. Army and as a Chief of Staff for three different Members of Congress.

Mr. Zito honorably served in the U.S. Army Field Artillery for nearly 23 years from 1991-2014 before retiring as a Command Sergeants Major.  Throughout his career, Mr. Zito served both domestically and abroad – including three 12-month tours in Combat during Operation Iraqi Freedom.  In 2011, upon his return from his third tour in Iraq, he was selected as one of the first two Command Sergeant Majors (or you can use the plural Command Sergeants Major) in the U.S. Army for the Defense Congressional Fellowship Program, which required the completion of a master’s degree in Legislative Affairs at The George Washington University and a yearlong assignment as a Defense Fellow for a U.S. Congressman. That year, he worked for a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee on Veterans Affairs, Defense, Homeland Security, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Agriculture policy.

During Mr. Zito’s time on Capitol Hill, he worked for three senior Members of Congress as Deputy Chief of Staff and later Chief of Staff.  In these rolls, he led congressional staff and advised the Members of Congress on all legislative and political matters related to the Appropriations Subcommittees on Homeland Security, Defense, Veterans Affairs, Commerce, Justice and Science, and finally the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Mr. Zito holds a BS in Homeland Security from Excelsior College, a Master’s in Emergency and Disaster Management from American Military University and a Master’s in Legislative Affairs from The George Washington University.
