Layla Ibrahim
Youth Preparedness Council

Region 3 - Virginia

For Layla, a 12th grade student from Virginia, understanding climate change is a key to preventing increasingly serious natural disasters. Her interest in climate change has sparked her desire to pursue a career in environmental engineering.

Layla aims to work on climate change preparedness while she is part of the YPC. Additionally, she would like to participate in projects to reduce gun violence in schools. She is particularly interested in implementing mental health support systems to help prevent school shootings.

As an intern with Global Leadership Adventures, Layla researched sustainability and ways to implement eco-friendly practices in daily life. She is working to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, focusing on environmental sustainability and plastic pollution. As president of her school’s Junior Civitan Club, Layla helped arrange over a dozen service projects throughout the year to give back to the local community. The club won her county’s Student Peace award after a successful donation drive for local Afghan refugees. Layla also serves as president of her school’s International Club and volunteered as a teacher’s assistant at an elementary school summer program.

Layla’s varied interests outside of school include playing soccer, reading science fiction, and watching Marvel movies.
