FEMA PROVIDES $3 MILLION TO THE HOUGHTON COUNTY ROAD COMMISSION

CHICAGO - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today that $3,186,949 in
federal funding has been made available to the Houghton County Road
Commission for disaster-related road repair and hazard mitigation
measures on Coles Creek Road in Stanton Township. 

This grant is part of FEMA’s recovery efforts in response to the
federal disaster declaration on August 2, 2018. The funding will
reimburse the Houghton County Road Commission for costs which will be
incurred repairing road damage following the severe storms, flooding,
and landslides that occurred between June 16, 2018 and June 18, 2018.
Approximately $271,000 will also be used to re-channel flood waters
and prevent overtopping and eroding of Coles Creek Road.

 “FEMA’s Public Assistance Program is an important resource for
communities after a disaster,” said James K. Joseph, FEMA Region V
Administrator. “This grant will not only repair a critical
transportation route for this community but help protect it from
future disaster-related damage.”

“This is a perfect example of what mitigation funding can do for a
community,” said Capt. Emmitt McGowan, deputy state director of
Emergency Management and Homeland Security and commander of the
Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security
Division. “I strongly encourage communities to take advantage of
mitigation funding to initiate projects that can potentially save
lives and protect public property and health.”

 FEMA will pay 75 percent of the $4,249,266 eligible project cost.
FEMA’s Public Assistance Program provides funding to local
government jurisdictions and eligible non-profits for the repair,
replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged infrastructure as well
as costs incurred for debris removal, disaster cleanup and emergency
actions taken to protect lives or property.
