FEMA TO PROVIDE MORE THAN $2.8 MILLION TO PROTECT AGAINST LANDSLIDE

DENVER – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has
announced a federal grant for the State of North Dakota that will make
$2,844,888.75 available for a project to protect a University of Mary
dormitory against the threat of a landslide.

The project will help to reinforce and stabilize the slope below the
North Dormitory on campus which sits along Apple Creek.  In recent
years, erosion has led to slope instability that has moved to within
50 feet of the building. North Dormitory houses approximately 225
students.

The grant represents a federal cost-share of the total project cost of
$3,793,185. The remainder of the project cost will be paid for by the
University.

The funding is provided through the FY17 round of FEMA’s
Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant program. The competitive grant program
provided $90 million for projects nationwide.  It provides funding to
assist states, tribal governments, territories and local communities
in their efforts to implement a sustained pre-disaster natural hazard
mitigation program.
