BOSTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $2 million to the State of Connecticut to reimburse Middlesex Hospital for the additional costs of operating safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The $2,048,115 FEMA Public Assistance grant to the general hospital in Middletown will reimburse it for the additional costs of operating in a pandemic environment between July 2021 and January 2022.

The expenses incurred included purchasing additional medical equipment and supplies for the treatment of COVID-19 patients; hiring additional medical care staff; purchasing personal protective equipment (PPE), and buying approximately 9,220 COVID-19 tests for patients and staff.

“FEMA is pleased to be able to assist Middlesex Hospital with these costs,” said FEMA Region 1 Regional Administrator Lori Ehrlich. “Providing resources for our partners on the front lines of the pandemic fight is critical to their success, and our success as a nation.”

FEMA’s Public Assistance program is an essential source of funding for states and communities recovering from a federally declared disaster or emergency.

So far, FEMA has provided more than $471 million in Public Assistance grants to Connecticut to reimburse the state for pandemic-related expenses.
