BRUNSWICK, Ga. — FEMA Individual assistance has been extended to disaster survivors in Charlton and Coffee counties to cover disaster-related expenses caused by Hurricane Irma. Homeowners, renters and business owners in those counties may now apply for federal disaster assistance for uninsured and underinsured losses caused by Hurricane Irma during the period of Sept. 7-20, 2017.

Assistance may include grants for critical needs, temporary rental assistance, home repairs, and uninsured personal property losses, and other programs such as the U.S. Small Business Administration’s low-interest disaster loan program, to help individuals recover from the effects of the disaster.

On Sept. 15, 2017, President Trump announced that federal disaster assistance has been made available for the counties of Camden, Chatham and Glynn. The counties of Liberty and McIntosh were added to the declaration Sept. 18, 2015.

There are several ways survivors can register with FEMA for disaster assistance.

  • The quickest way to apply for federal assistance is online at DisasterAssistance.gov or through the FEMA mobile app.
  • They can also call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. Survivors who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY should call 800-462-7585. Multilingual operators are available; press 2 for Spanish or 3 for other languages. Because of high demand, lines may be busy.  Please be patient and try calling in the morning or evening when call volume may be lower.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government’s primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profit organizations fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations. For more information, applicants may contact SBA’s Disaster Assistance Customer Service Center by calling 800-659-2955, emailing disastercustomerservice@sba.gov, or visiting SBA’s Web site at www.sba.gov/disaster. Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals may call 800-877-8339.
