The State of West Virginia will receive $26.8 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help relocate an elementary school damaged in 2016 by severe storms, floods, landslides and mudslides.
This award provides $26,851,044.60 in federal funding for the relocation of the Clendenin Elementary School, which was damaged as a result of FEMA-DR-4273-WV. This funding is being provided under authority of Section 428 of the Robert T. Stafford Act.
“This award marks an important step in Kanawha County’s recovery and return to normal,” said Regional Administrator MaryAnn Tierney of FEMA Region 3. “It means the community is closer to getting schoolchildren out of temporary classrooms and into their permanent school – and that’s good news for everyone.”
FEMA obligates funding for this project directly to the state, which then must ensure that the eligible sub-recipient, the Kanawha County School Building Authority, receives this award. Following the state's review process and upon receipt of appropriate documentation, they will provide funds to the sub-recipient on a reimbursable basis.
At this time, FEMA has obligated more than $369 million in Public Assistance grants to West Virginia to reimburse the state for damages caused by the storm.
