Recheck the Damage to Your Home Before FEMA Registration Ends July 2

PONCE, Puerto Rico – With seismic activity centered along Puerto Rico’s southern coast for the past six months, time is running out for people who may qualify for FEMA disaster assistance, since the deadline is July 2.

FEMA is encouraging residents to use these last few days to evaluate damage to your homes from the earthquakes that began Dec. 28.

In cases where the home was already weak, the magnitude 5.4 earthquake on May 2 and regular tremors since then may have taken an additional toll on the structures, resulting in new damage that may only just become visible.

It is timely that residents of the seismic activity zone check their property again to confirm if they need assistance with earthquake-related losses that insurance may not or did not cover.

So far, more than 40,000 households have already applied for assistance, and new applications are being received each day.

To find out if you qualify for FEMA assistance, apply. You can communicate with FEMA by any of the following alternatives:

• Call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 (FEMA) or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Press 2 for a Spanish-speaking operator. Lines are open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.
• Visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
• Download FEMA’s mobile app. Select Disaster Resources and click on Apply for Assistance Online. If you have an Apple device: Text APPLE to 43362 (4FEMA). For those with an Android device: Text ANDROID to 43362 (4FEMA). For more information go to: www.fema.gov/mobile-app.
• Visit any open Disaster Recovery Center. To have a FEMA specialist review your application in person, call the Helpline and make an appointment.
