Wildfire Survivors Can Get Assistance for Unmet Disaster-Related Needs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Immediate Disaster Case Management (IDCM) is a federal program that assists disaster survivors with resources they may not realize are available. The program pairs non-profit resources with one-on-one case management. “There’s 700 organizations they (case workers) have access to,” said Duane Crowder with Magalia Pines Baptist Church, one of the program’s five host sites. “Nobody’s ever heard of a lot of these resources.

“The work they’re doing is real work that helps people actually change their circumstances,” said Crowder. “And they are changing their circumstances. It’s meaningful.”

The program assigns a case manager to work closely with any Camp Fire survivor to identify resources for unmet, disaster-related needs and to also develop a personalized disaster recovery plan. The program is available to any Camp Fire survivor and is being offered at five locations across Butte County next week. Please note, the Butte County Employment Center is a fixed location; the other four locations are subject to change. IDCM is managed through a partnership between FEMA and the Administration for Children and Families, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. FEMA personnel will not be on-site at the counseling locations; the Administration for Children and Families handles IDCM’s counseling and case management endeavors.
 

Case Managers can assist with the following:

  • Assessment of client disaster-related unmet needs
  • Development of a personal disaster recovery plan with referrals to resources, appointments, and steps needed to obtain benefits such as:
    • Behavior Health Services
    • Furniture and Appliances
    • Child and Youth Services
    • Health Insurance
    • Clothing
    • Housing
    • Durable Medical Equipment
    • Legal Referral Services
    • Employment
    • Senior Services
    • Financial Assistance
    • Transportation
    • Food

The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), IDCM supports states, tribes, and territories, local and non-profit organizations by providing disaster case management services to individuals and families impacted by a disaster.

IDCM’s goals are:

  • Assess individual and family disaster-caused unmet needs, develop a recovery plan and link disaster survivors to resources and programs that will promote a rapid and equitable recovery.
  • Build and strengthen local disaster case management infrastructure by providing disaster case management training.
