Resources are Available to Survivors as FEMA’s Transitional Sheltering Assistance Program Ends

As of June 27, 1,763 Puerto Rico households are checked into hotels and motels through the Transitional Sheltering Assistance program. 534 are in Puerto Rico and 1,229 are in the continental U.S. Of the 1,229 households, 1,172 of these fall into one or more of the following categories:

    • 663 have received two months of financial rental assistance from FEMA.
    • 225 have withdrawn their applications for federal disaster assistance.
    • 167 had homes with insufficient damage and their utilities were on at the time of their housing inspection.
    • 134 reported no damage to their home.
    • 63 households either failed to prove they lived in the address on their application or had no contact with an inspector or the property claimed was not their primary residence.
    • 56 have already had repairs completed on their home through Puerto Rico’s Tu Hogar Renace.

Additionally, on May 3, FEMA announced transportation assistance to Puerto Rico survivors checked into TSA-participating hotels in the continental U.S. to offer assistance to them in returning home.

Multiple attempts were made to all eligible households and more than 1,500 have been contacted by about transportation assistance. Of those families, more than 200 families have been referred to FEMA’s National Travel hotline, more than 145 families have booked their return travel or already returned to Puerto Rico.

Those from hurricanes Harvey, Irma and María moving on from the Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program as it ends on June 30 have a wide variety of Federal, state, local, and voluntary resources available to them, but these resources require survivors to be active participants in their own recovery.

Survivors still needing help with longer-term housing assistance, legal advice and crisis counseling can contact the Immediate Disaster Case Management program until July 2. For survivors in Puerto Rico, the longer-term DCM program grant will be awarded in the coming weeks and survivors with open cases who participated in the IDCM will be transferred to a case manager on the island for ongoing support.

Survivors on the island who did not previously participate in the IDCM program will have access to the DCM program available at planned Community Recovery Centers (CRC), Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC), and through local voluntary organizations across the island. Organizations will do their own outreach in the areas they are working and will coordinate with FEMA external affairs to ensure information is shared publicly.

For survivors outside Puerto Rico, ongoing case management services are being provided in a number of locations to support those who are looking to remain in the Continental United States (CONUS). Case managers have and continue to actively connect survivors with non-governmental organizations or state supported programs for longer-term case management support and states hosting evacuees are establishing long-term plans to support survivors who choose to not return to Puerto Rico.
