More Than $54 Million Goes to North Carolina Disaster Assistance

RALEIGH, N.C. -- In the two months since Hurricane Irene struck North Carolina, more than
$54 million in state and federal aid has been approved to assist recovery across the 38 counties designated for individual assistance in the disaster declaration.

More than 33,400 survivors have contacted the Federal Emergency Management Agency for help or information regarding disaster assistance. Many people have sought housing assistance from FEMA because their primary home has been damaged or destroyed. Other callers may have been interested in disaster unemployment assistance, crisis counseling or legal aid.

Survivors who do not need FEMA disaster assistance or have additional needs are referred to partner agencies such as the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the Small Business Administration.

The following is a snapshot of the disaster recovery effort:

  • Nearly 9,000 households have received FEMA grants to help pay for temporary housing and/or replace personal property.
  • More than $22.3 million approved for housing grants, including short-term rental assistance
    and home repair costs.
  • More than $4.7 million approved to cover other essential disaster-related needs, such as medical and dental expenses and lost personal possessions.
  • More than $27.3 million in low-interest disaster loans approved by the SBA.
  • More than 25,200 home inspections completed.
  • Nearly 17,000 visits to disaster recovery centers by people affected by the disaster.
  • Five disaster recovery centers are open next week.

No matter the degree of loss or insurance coverage, survivors are urged to apply for help. The deadline to apply for federal disaster assistance is Nov. 30. They can use any of the following methods:

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
