Ground Breaking Ceremony for the Toa Baja Project Impact Community

The New Safe Housing Program, for victims of Hurricane Georges had its "ground breaking" ceremony on Friday, November 5th, 1999, at the Campanillas Farm in the municipality of Toa Baja with the participation of the Honorable Pedro Rossell?, Governor of Puerto Rico, along with other PR & FEMA government officials.

This project site will consist of the construction of 223 safe single-family units. The project site will cover approximately 22 acres and will be located at PR State Road PR-876, Kilometer 4.6, in the Municipality of Toa Baja. The cost for the project will be approximatly 13.2 million dollars of which 75% would come from FEMA hazard mitigation funds and 25% from the Government of Puerto Rico. This project is one of three pilot projects in Puerto Rico. The other two projects will be located at the municipalities of Can?vanas and Ponce.

The New Safe Housing Program follows the principles of FEMA's"Project Impact" Building Disaster Resistant Communities. Project Impact promotes the concept that damage to property can be reduced significantly by consistently building safer and stronger buildings, strengthening existing infrastructures, enforcing building codes, and making the proper preparations BEFORE a disaster occurs.
