Potential Flooding on Mississippi River

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Recent heavy rains has officials in Illinois and Iowa closely monitoring water levels on the Mississippi River.

The National Weather Service is forecasting major flooding along the Mississippi River at Keithsburg, Ill.. The river is expected to crest at Keithsburg three and one half feet above flood stage on Saturday, May 22. There is the potential for a recreational vehicle park and numerous homes to be affected.

Major flooding is also forecast along the river at Burlington, Iowa. The river is expected to crest there on May 22 at three feet above flood stage. Homes in the community of Niota could be flooded and officials have activated their emergency plan to protect the area.

FEMA's regional offices in Chicago (Region V) and Kansas City, Mo. (Region VII) are monitoring the situation in Illinois and Iowa.
