WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Weather Service (NWS) reports another powerful storm in a long series of storms is pounding coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest today. Residents of Oregon and northern and central California can expect heavy rain, gusty winds and pounding surf to last through the evening.

NWS forecasters expect precipitation totals could reach three inches, falling in the form of rain in the lower elevations and snow in the mountains. Coastal areas of southern Washington, Oregon and northern California could see swells of more than 20 feet and a surf advisory has been posted along the Oregon coast. Earlier storms have battered the coast and have left debris and logs strewn across the beaches and can be dangerous when tossed about by heavy surf.
