Endemic Elfin Woods Warbler (Setophaga angelae)

Maricao, Puerto Rico -- The Elfin Woods Warbler is a rare endemic species discovered in Puerto Rico in 1969. Its habitat is restricted, limited to two known areas of Puerto Rico--El Yunque National Forest in the east and Maricao State Forest in the west. With the destruction of El Yunque by Hurricane Maria, the future of the species appears grim. No surveys have yet to be conducted to verify the bird's existence in the east.
